About This File

I present you the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk created by @active, now uploaded to work on XPlane11 (Originally made for XP9).
This time, @active gave me permission to repost his work on the forum:

Here's his presentation:

This is a project started back in 2011 and given up in 2012. I finally decided to finish it as it was lacking the 3D cockpit. I just don't like unfinished projects. So here it is. This plane is made for X-Plane 9.70. No version 10.xx planned. However, I briefly tested it and it should work ok.

It comes with a few liveries which are described into the manual. A brief description of the cockpit panel is included too.

Some considerations to be aware of:

- aircraft has no speed brakes. The speedbrake handle opens/closes the canopy.
- aircraft has no flaps. The flaps handles opens/close the bomb bay doors. NO BUTTON IN THE COCKPIT: USE THE KEYBOARD
- This aircraft needs to be trimmed down just after take off, and trimmed up before landing. It has no TRIM BUTTONS. Assign trim buttons to your joystick or keyboard.

Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk - Military Aircraft - X-Plane.Org Forum - Google Chrome 03_06_2020 09_49_43.jpg

The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is an American single-seat, twin engine stealth attack aircraft that was developed by Lockheed's secretive Skunk Works division and operated by the United States Air Force (USAF). The F-117 was based on the Have Blue technology demonstrator.

The Nighthawk was the first operational aircraft to be designed around stealth technology. Its maiden flight took place in 1981 at Groom Lake, Nevada, and the aircraft achieved initial operating capability status in 1983. The Nighthawk was shrouded in secrecy until it was revealed to the public in 1988. Of the 64 F-117s built, 59 were production versions, with the other five being prototypes.

The F-117 was widely publicized for its role in the Persian Gulf War of 1991. Although it was commonly referred to as the "Stealth Fighter", it was strictly a ground-attack aircraft. F-117s took part in the conflict in Yugoslavia, where one was shot down by a surface-to-air missile (SAM) in 1999; it was the only Nighthawk to be lost in combat. The U.S. Air Force retired the F-117 in April 2008, primarily due to the fielding of the F-22 Raptor. Despite the type's retirement, a portion of the fleet has been kept in airworthy condition, and Nighthawks have been observed flying in 2020.

Thanks for a great addition to my fleet. The modeling and attention to detail are outsanding! A little hard on frme rates but I guess that is to be expected as aircraft advance in design and graphical presentation.

I think the flight model needs a little work. Even though you caution that you need downward elevator trim, when applied, the aircraft bobs up and down. It even flips over. Yes, I was a little heavy handed at first but not many people will be able to fly this model too far from the airport to the crash site.

Reduction in power also brings nose down pitching moment which is uncontrollable. Even SLOWLY reducing the thrust causes heavy pitching moments which most times... leads to a stall, spin, and crash in that order.

This the most BEAUTIFUL model that I have seen in a while. Your creativity is reflected in the cockpit and the exterior skin and is greatly appreciated. Keep up the good works and I look forward to manyh hours flying this aircraft and to, hopefully, subsequent updates and improvements.

All The Best!

Response from the author:

Yo man you're welcome, and thank you too!

Keep in mind that I didn't create this airplane, as shown on the description, it was an authorised repost.

Surprisingly, even tho you found the F-117 a bit too unstable in flight, you'll find that's how the F-117 flies: It was so unstable that was controlled by computers most of the time. Yes, it was that unstable.

Thanks for the review, and if you find something else you think you should change on the airplane, please notify me, I may or may not add it on a future update, giving you credit depending on if it's worth or not and if it will change the plane's realism.

Personally, I was able to fly successful first try, and yes, it's a  hard plane to fly, but you'll certainly get used to it.

Be safe

Love it! if you could make a b-2 it would be awesome!

Response from the author:

I didn't made this plane.
A B-2 would be cool tho, but I'm currently creating my own design.

Rather twitchy A/C to fly....  I discovered you could avoid a severe (not recoverable) pitch up after takeoff by shifting the CG to -18 inches. It would be nice if you had LG and flaps for slowing down to land.   Could be fun to fly if developed further.

Very unstable to fly, even with the trim up/down. When applying autopilot it starts ballooning, up down, up down, flipping over into a stall. At night can't read instrument panels, as there just a bright glare. Also cockpit and instrument button doesn't seem to work....and before you ask, I'm not flying with a mouse🙄, and I have settings to HDR+. It's a beautiful plane. It's in my top 3 for IRL Favs. But this one is not fun to fly in game.
