I have personally driven an unmodified US E36 M3 150 mph (by GPS measurement), and it still had a bit more left in it, so I’m not sure where that “140 mph” top speed is from.

Never mind, the car did have a mild ECU tune on it that removed the speed limiter and raised the rev limit, so that’s probably why it got up to 150 mph. Looks like they’re limited to 140 mph in stock form.

I think many owners upgraded to Euro spec. There probably was some exhaust work and little ECU tweaks involved and voila - full power. Most likely it was emissions related nerf.
