Since I started making card trick quilt blocks I’ve always done it a certain way which actually took longer and I never knew that there is another way that could make the process faster and easier than what I usually do. I was so happy when I found this video tutorial by Tulip Square on YouTube that I went ahead and tried it immediately. I wasn’t disappointed with the result because it looked so neat and beautiful, plus, it really did take only a few minutes to finish a single block. From now on, this is the only way I’ll ever make card trick quilt blocks!

Materials:

Fabric Color #1

  • 2 squares @ 2 inches
  • 1 rectangle @ 2 x 3½ inches

Fabric Color #2

  • 2 squares @ 2 inches
  • 1 rectangle @ 2 x 3½ inches

Fabric Color #3

  • 2 squares @ 2 inches
  • 1 rectangle @ 2 x 3½ inches

Fabric Color #4

  • 2 squares @ 2 inches
  • 1 rectangle @ 2 x 3½ inches

Background Fabric

  • 4 squares @ 2 inches
  • 2 squares @ 5 inches

Directions:

Step 1

Assemble the colored squares or card colors into a 2×2 grid in whichever order you want, then lay the square on the right side on top of the left side making sure their edges are matching and the right sides are facing, and then sew them together on one side with a ¼-inch seam allowance. Repeat the same process with the 2 squares at the bottom, then sew them together into a square making sure that their seams are going in the opposite direction, and press open. Lay a colored rectangle on each side of the block making sure that the rectangle on the left side is matching with the color on the bottom left corner, while the rectangle on the other side is matching the upper right corner color, then sew them in place, and press open nicely.

Step 2

For the 2 remaining rectangles, sew 2 background squares on each of their shorter sides, and lay them on each side of the pieced block making sure to place them beside the color of fabric that they match with. Give the block a nice press and set it aside, then get the 2 large background fabric pieces, and lay 2 colored squares on each opposite corner diagonally as shown in the video. Sew the colored square in place diagonally, then trim off the excess, and press them open. Cut the background blocks in half diagonally making sure not to cut the colored corners, then lay them on each side of the pieced block, and make sure that the color of the corners is opposite the colors of the side they are placed in. Sew them in place with a ¼ inch seam allowance, then straighten the edges, and you’re done!
