There was Carrie Bradshaw, there was Olivia Pope, and now there’s Nadja, our latest and greatest TV role model. Have all made questionable decisions in their on-screen adventures? You bet. But the female component of FX’s What We Do In The Shadows is not only the best part of the comedy series, she’s a woman of our times, even if she’s hundreds of years old.

There’s a lot we can learn from Nadja, played to perfection by actress Natasia Demetriou. The character serves as a voice of reason amongst her group of clueless vampire pals, while also providing a heavy dose of the humor — due not just to her exceptional eye rolls, but also the manner in which she expresses her thoughts, which can range from disinterested to giddy.

When we think of on-screen female role models, we’re so quick to pay attention to their fashion or their boyfriends, neither of which are relevant in this case. As far as Nadja’s fashion goes, well, it’s a lot of black (it’s ALL black) which is already chic, and also includes a whole lot of capes and other drapey garments. It’s a look that radiates elegance while also conveying that any current trends can fuck right off.

And as far as the men in her life go, she is married to Laszlo (Matt Berry) and though they clearly have a mutual adoration for each other, she mostly professes her love for him through bickering. However, it’s clear she wears the pants not only in that relationship but in the entire house. All the men are sure to treat her like an equal, even though they ultimately remain rightfully scared of her. The same applies to Gregor, her ex-lover who has taken the latest form as an average white man (Jake McDorman) so average, Nadja can’t even be bothered to learn how to pronounce his name (it’s Jeff).

Besides disregarding the correct pronunciation of someone’s name, a total boss move, Nadja also rules because she takes no shit from anyone. She’s smart and effortlessly cool and can eviscerate someone with her words or a death stare. But that doesn’t mean she’s missing a soft side either. Throughout Season 1, her feminist side was in full effect as she took dorky college student Jenna (Beanie Feldstein) under her bat wing. Yes, she turned her into a vampire, but also taught her how to have confidence in herself, find her own superpower of invisibility and how to use it to her advantage. It was a sign that Nadja’s heart is not quite as dead as her human form has been for many years.

There are many reasons to watch the wonderfully ridiculous What We Do In The Shadows, but the best reason just might be the reminder that in a world of Kardashians, we should all strive to be a Nadja.
