Incredibly Clean LS7-Powered 1972 GMC Jimmy Rakes in Big Money at Auction
Retaining all its vintage style but adding a modern powertrain, this 1972 GMC Jimmy unsurprisingly proved to be a hot entity on the auction block.
These days, restomodded SUVs from prior decades are arguably the hottest entities in the collector car market, following many years of simply being ignored. That’s obviously not the case now, as the prices of vehicles like the Chevy Blazer and GMC Jimmy have skyrocketed to new crazy heights – even for examples that aren’t in top condition. That certainly isn’t the case with this stellar 1972 GMC Jimmy that recently crossed the auction block at Bring a Trailer, however – rather, this big-bodied SUV is worth every single penny the new owner put forth to bring it home.
After it was acquired by the seller back in 2021, they immediately went to work breathing new life into the old 1972 GMC Jimmy. That process involved removing the bodywork from the chassis, at which point everything was redone. Now sporting Metallic Green paint on the outside with a white top, the big SUV looks largely stock with its white 15-inch steel wheels, but it also touts Holley RetroBright LED headlights, LED taillights and marker lights, and a set of 33-inch BFGoodrich rubber.
The retro theme carries over to the inside, where you’ll find a very green interior packed with seats covered in white vinyl with green plaid inserts, plus amenities such as a nice three-spoke steering wheel, Dakota Digital gauges, a Vintage Air climate control system, and a RetroSound stereo system with a Rockford Fosgate amplifier, Hertz speakers, and an Audison subwoofer.
The vintage Jimmy rides higher than stock thanks to a 2.5-inch lift kit, which is supplemented by Bilstein shocks, Off Road Designs leaf springs, and manually locking Warn front hubs. Pop the hood, and you’ll find an immaculate presentation highlighted by a 7.0-liter LS7 V8, which is paired with an Edelbrock intake manifold, a Holley Terminator X electronic fuel injection system, and Schoenfeld headers. Power flows to the wheels via a 4L80E four-speed automatic transmission, an NP205 dual-range transfer case, and a Dana 44 front axle and a 12-bolt rear axle, both stuffed with 3.73 gears.
Vintage SUVs certainly don’t get much nicer than this 1972 GMC Jimmy, which combines the best of all worlds with its undeniable classic style and modern powertrain. As such, it’s really no surprise that this stellar find hammered for a significant $135,000 – After all, who wouldn’t want something like this in their garage?
