Lane Motor Museum’s 1985 Renault R5 Turbo 2

This 1985 Renault R5 Turbo 2 is one of approximately 3,200 examples built during a three-year production run. The car was imported to the United States by Bavarian Motors of Cincinnati, Ohio, and spent time in several states before being acquired by Jeff Lane in 2001. It was subsequently donated in 2002 to the then newly established Lane Motor Museum of Nashville, Tennessee, as part of an initial gift of 85 vehicles from Mr. Lane’s personal collection. Work performed in April 2022 involved adjusting the valves of the turbocharged 1,397cc inline-four, replacing the clutch slave cylinder for the five-speed manual transaxle, and performing brake and hydraulic system flushes. Modifications consist of a roll bar along with 15″ HRE multi-piece wheels, and the car is also equipped with an independent double-wishbone suspension, boxed fender flares, and front and rear fog lights. This Type 8220 R5 Turbo 2 is now offered with manufacturer’s literature, partial service records, an accident-free Carfax report, and a clean Tennessee title.

Penned by Marc Deschamps and Marcello Gandini at Bertone, the R5 Turbo debuted at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1980 and was designed to compete in FIA Group 4 racing. This example is finished in black with contrasting Turbo 2 graphics and features front and rear fog lights, boxed fender flares, quarter panel intakes, and rubber roof gutters. The seller notes various imperfections in the paint, close-up photos of which are presented in the gallery.

Staggered-width 15″ HRE wheels feature multi-piece construction and are mounted with 205/50 Yokohama S-Drive front tires along with 26/61 Michelin TB-15 classic rally rear rubber. The car rides on an independent double-wishbone suspension with torsion bars up front and a coil spring setup out back. The seller states that Bilstein shocks were installed in September 2012 and chromoly rear lower control arms were fitted in August 2016. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes with braided brake hoses that were installed in April 2022. Additional work performed at that time included brake and hydraulic system flushes.

The cabin houses high-back bucket seats that are said to have received bolster repairs and replacement tan cloth covers in January 2023. A four-point roll bar was installed under previous ownership, and additional appointments include a heater, manual-crank windows, and Turbo-branded floor mats. Various trim items show wear, scuffs are visible on the door sills, and an area of rust is noted beneath the passenger footwell.

The leather-wrapped Iso-Delta steering wheel frames Jaeger instrumentation consisting of a 150-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. Jaeger oil pressure and boost gauges are mounted in the center of the dash. The horn is inoperative, and a sticker indicating mph has been placed over the factory km/h speedometer face. The six-digit odometer shows 70k kilometers (~43k miles), approximately 30k of which were added under current ownership. The Carfax report lists a 106k-mile entry in May 1998, and true mileage is unknown.

The cargo shelf lifts to expose an insulated engine bay that houses a 1,397cc inline-four equipped with a single Garrett turbocharger and Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The engine was rated at 160 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque when new. An oil change was last completed in February 2021, and service performed in April 2022 is said to have included adjusting the valves and replacing the engine breather, valve cover gasket, driveshaft seals, and spark plugs.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. The clutch slave cylinder and shifter bushings were replaced in April 2022, according to the seller.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists history in Illinois, Michigan, Texas, Florida, and Tennessee from its first entry in April 1993 through its most recent in June 2010. A failed emissions inspection is noted in April 1998.
