Embroidery in India includes dozens of embroidery styles that vary by region and clothing style. Among these, Shisha embroidery or mirror embroidery is the most unique technique with thousands of years of history.

The history of shisha runs back to the 17 century. As per the legends, the embroidery technique has first started in Iran and the Mughals introduced it to the Indians. The embroidery is done by attaching small pieces of reflective materials to a fabric surface in an intricate manner. In the beginning, mica was used as a shiny material, and later on, craftsmen started using coins, tin, or silver. These were then replaced by the glass in the early twentieth century. The glass was blown into large, thin bubbles and broken into small, round pieces – hence the earlier examples have a slight convex curve. It’s evident that Mirror works have the capability to enhance the look and feel of any plain fabric with a touch of gleam.
