Abstract
A variety of rose plant of the shrub class, named ‘AUSchariot’. The ‘AUSchariot’ rose is a plant suitable for repeat cut flower production having bright crimson buds that gradually open to reveal many-petalled, deep red blooms with a light, fruity fragrance and long vase life, produced on strong upright stems.
Description
Classification: The present invention relates to a new Rosa hybrida shrub.
Variety denomination: The new plant has the varietal denomination ‘AUSchariot’.
The current application claims priority to a European Breeder's Right Certificate Application No. CPVO 2010/1102, filed May 25, 2010, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
This invention relates to a new and distinct variety of shrub rose plant named ‘AUSchariot’, which was originated by cross pollination of two unnamed, unpatented varieties of Rosa hybrida.
The primary objective of this breeding was to produce bright crimson buds that gradually open to reveal many-petalled, deep red blooms with a light, fruity fragrance and long vase life, produced on strong upright stems which are suitable for year round cut flower production under standard greenhouse conditions.
Among the features which distinguish the new variety from other presently available and commercial rose cultivars known to the inventor is the following combination of characteristics: double, deep red blooms, stamens that are revealed as the flower ages, a light, fruity fragrance, strong upright stems suitable for cut flower use, and a long vase life.
Asexual reproduction of the new variety by cutting as performed in greenhouses at Bowling Green Lane in Albrighton, Britain shows that the foregoing and other distinguishing characteristics come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding asexual propagations. ‘AUSchariot’ may be asexually propagated by cutting.
The new rose may be distinguished from its seed parent, by the following combination of characteristics: whereas the seed parent has blooms that are a lighter shade of red and are rosette shaped, ‘AUSchariot’ bears double blooms of a deep red.
The new variety may be distinguished from its pollen parent, by the following combination of characteristics: whereas the pollen parent has orange-colored blooms with no form and poor lastingness, ‘AUSchariot’ has deep red blooms that have a long vase life.
The closest commercially available cultivar to the new variety is the ‘AUSdecorum’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 18717). The new rose may be distinguished from the ‘AUSdecorum’ variety by the following combination of characteristics: the ‘AUSdecorum’ has far fewer petals than does the ‘AUSchariot’, and the ‘AUSdecorum’ has much stronger sepal extensions. In addition, the leaves of the ‘AUSchariot’ are matte, compared to the semi-glossy foliage of ‘AUSdecorum’.
The accompanying photograph illustrates the new variety and shows the flowering thereof from bud to full bloom depicted in color as nearly correct as it is possible to make in a color illustration of the character. Throughout this specification, color references and/or values are based upon The Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society (2001) except where common terms of color definition are employed.
The following description is of 2 year-old rose plants of the new variety grown indoors in a greenhouse in Albrighton, Britain in the month of July. Phenotypic expression may vary with environmental, cultural and climatic conditions, as well as differences in conditions of light and soil.
- Blooming habit: Continuous. The number of blooms per plant during the growing season is profuse, but there are too many to count.
- Bud:

- Size.—About 2 cm long and 1.7 cm in diameter when the petals start to unfurl.
- Form.—The bud form is short.
- Color.—When sepals first divide, the bud color is red-purple RHS 61A. When half blown, the upper sides of the petals are red-purple RHS 61A, and the lower sides of the petals are red-purple RHS 60B.
- Calyx.—Shape: (from above) star-shaped, with the sepals folding right back when the flower is fully open. Length: 5 cm. Diameter: 1 cm.
- Sepals.—Arrangement: regular. Color: Upper Surface: grayed-green RHS 191B. Lower Surface: yellow-green RHS 144B. Length: 2.9 cm. Width: 1 cm. Shape: triangular. Margin: slightly hairy. Surface texture: Upper Surface: downy. Lower Surface: smooth. Number: There are three normally appendaged sepals. There are 2 unappendaged sepals with slightly hairy edges.
- Receptacles.—Color: yellow-green RHS 144A. Shape: funnel. Size: medium, about 0.8 cm×1 cm. Surface: smooth.
- Peduncle.—Length: medium, averaging about 5 cm. Surface: smooth. Color: yellow-green RHS 144A. Strength: strong.
