C. HOLLWEG.
GORKSGREW.
N0. 447,185'. Patented Feb. 24, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CARL HOLLWEG, OF BARMEN, GERMANY.
C O R K S C R EW SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,185, dated February 24, 1891.
Appllcationrled October 6, 1890. Serial No. 367,247. (No model.)
To all whom' t may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL HOLLWEG, a su bject ol the King of Prussia, residingat Barmen, in the Province of Rhenish Prussia, Germ any, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corkscrews, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a corkscrew the handle of which can be used as a protecting sheath.
The invent-ion is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l shows the corkscrew opened for use. Fig. 2 shows the Corkscrew closed. Fig. 3 shows the corkscrew partly opened. Fig. 4 shows the construction of the handle. Fig. 5 shows a side view and an edge view of a handlesection. Fig. 6 shows a side and edge view of the plate for fastening the shank of the corkscrew to the handle. Fig. 7 shows an edge and face View of a hinge-plate.
'lhe handle G consists of four pieces g, jointed to one another, and which can be folded together in the direction of the two diagonals, as seen in Fig. 3. Vhen open, Fig. 1, the handle G can be grasped to operate the device, and when closed the handle forms a protecting sheath for the-screw-shank Each piece or section g consists of a piece of tin or sheet metal, Fig. 5, with a U-shaped crosssection, and at opposite corners aathe pieces are jointed by simple joints or pivot-pins. Atthe othercorners hinge-plates b,with double joints or two pintles, are employed, and at these points, also, the sections are provided with intermeshing gears z, Figs. 2, 4, and 5,
the construction being such that the four pieces or sections g, pivoted at their ends, form a toggle-joint. The screw-shank k is securedvto one ol' the double joints by a fastening-plate h, to which the shank is riveted or secured, and through which plate are passed the pintles o o of a double joint. The gears ,z prevent the shank k from inclining to one side or another, as said gears insure veven movement of the sections g. When the corkscrew is opened, Fig. l, the handle is at right angles to the shank 7c, and when the device is closed, Fig. 2, the handle-sections form a sheath about the shank.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A corkscrew having a handle composed of four pieces connected at their ends to form a toggle-joint, and provided with gears, in combination with a screw-shank secured to the handle at one of the joints, substantially as described.
2. A corkscrew having a handle composed of four pieces connected at their ends to form a toggle-joint, and provided at diagonal or opposite corners with double joints and intermeshing gears, and a screw-shank secured to the handle at one of the double joints, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence, ot' two subscrihing witnesses.
. CARL HOLLWEG.
