A 1 Claim.
This invention relates to cutlery and particularly to knives that are adapted for use in cutting bread,'meat and the like.
Heretofore, knives have been made with a Wavelike or saw-tooth cutting edge, but there has been a problem in making such knife with a hollow ground edge and particularly in making an edge whichwould cut with an equal degree of satisfaction when the knife is moved in both direc- Usually, the cutting edge has been present only on the forward or leading edge of the wave or saw-tooth construction.
An object'of the present invention, therefore, is to construct a knife which has a hollow ground wave-like cutting edge and which also has such formation that the knife will out equally as well on the backward as on the forward stroke.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a knife embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on a plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentaryview showing a portion of the knife edge on a'sc'ale larger than that of Fig. 1.
The knife with which the present invention is illustrated embodies a blade H] which is afiixed to a handle I l and, as is shown in Fig. 2, the blade is hollow ground as at i2, and I3, along opposite sides to form the cutting edge l4. Moreover, the cutting edge has a Wave-like formation throughout the length of the blade.
I have found that to effect a cutting edge which has the same degree of sharpness on both sides of the wave crest, a relationship should be maintained between the depth of the wave and the pitch of the wave. I have found also that best results are obtained by having the ratio of the pitch to the depth of the waves of substantially 16 to 1, this being indicated in Fig. 3, where the distance A would, for example, be of an inch, while the pitch represented by B would be approximately 1 inch. By maintaining such ratio throughout the length of the blade, I have obtained a cutting edge of a high degree of sharpness throughout all parts of the blade and particularly upon the leading and the following portions of the wave crest.
A blade having my invention is illustrated in connection with household cutery, but it need not be restricted to such use for it is suitable for use on any blade where the cutting is performed by reciprocating operation.
I claim:
A knife having a blade, said blade being hollow ground on both sides of one edge thereof to form a cutting edge, said blade being serrated along the cutting edge in a wave-like formation, and said serrated edge having a. ratio of the pitch to the depth of the wave of approximately 16 to l.
